Story

Background

I am a horticulturist in love with the gifts given through the world of plants.  I have found wonder and awe through the seasonal changes.  The beauty, majesty, culinary and the healing properties are still being discovered.  Plants are blessings we are called to share.

Celtic Silk is a lotion I created for my mother. Knowing the healing properties of Calendula, I began to research and experiment to find a lotion that would help her dry skin.

Awareness

The goal is to raise funds for research and bring awareness to the rare disease - NKH (nonketotic hyperglycinemia) with the net proceeds of Celtic Silk products.

Non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is a rare, genetic, metabolic disorder caused by a defect in the enzyme system that breaks down the amino acid glycine, resulting in an accumulation of glycine in the body’s tissues and fluids. There is a classical form of NKH and a variant form of NKH. The classical form is then further divided into severe disorder or an attenuated form (mild form).

All net proceeds go to the only NKH Research in the US. -University of Colorado with the Dept of Pediatrics, Dr Johan Van Hove.

We learned of this horrible disease through the birth of our grandson, Owen.  It is an extremely upsetting moment to realize there is something not right with a child and no one knows why.  Three weeks of fighting to keep a newborn alive only to learn there is no cure. Our little man is one of only 500 worldwide cases.  A genetic disorder that destroys quality of life, the unknowns of longevity, the medications, the sacrifices that have been made for our grandson is overwhelming and still full of hope.
As a grandma who wants the best for her children and grandchildren, I was completely useless in the agonizing days of his early life.  Determined to help in anyway I could, efforts were made to raise funds via selling plants from my garden. My mother suggested selling the lotions.

Now my goal is to educate about NKH, raise funds for research and help soothe the skin of those who buy my Celtic Silk. (Owen means Celtic Warrior.)  I am fighting for him.
